Le Weekend Deux

Bonjour le weekend... il m'est manque!!!

Oh Saturday! My super wonderful host family took me on a little trip to the city of Cagnes Sur Mer again! And we went to two museums- Le musee Renoir et un musee d'un chateau! It was sooo nice to have very relaxing afternoon! The musee Renoir was so amazing- it was his actual house where he lived the last years of his life. You could look out the window and see what he painted right next to the actual painting. Wow!! And the view was spectacular- so amazing of the sea and the beautiful old city.

Then we went to that beautiful old city and thats where the chateau museum was. The architecture of the chateau was truly stunning. There was this beautiful staircase in the middle of the castle that had an open roof...amazing.  And the view at the very top = even more amazing!!

Apres that we went home and then my host family took me to a "vraiment francais" film called "Imogene". It was very funny and kind of completely random- kind of like a French "Mr. Magoo" but a girl.

And then it was like 9:00pm and I was starving ... but it was good cause we were about to go to diner yayyy... It was about 10 or so french adults and also me and Nabil (my "host-cousin"). It was a good french meal (=took about three hours) and my favorite part was definitely the strawberry-praline ice cream at the end...mmmm.
At about midnight I was literally falling asleep in my coffee- so I think the host-parents caught on and took me home (haha... now who is the bebe??)
Shew quelle journee!!

I got to sleep in a little on Sunday morning (='til 9) and it felt so amazing! Then I ate some breakfast and it was amazing because my host-mom had just got back from the market with a pain au chocolat for me (=pastry with chocolate inside! mmmm). Then off to their beautiful church with the host dad- and I actually followed (and even said the prayers) this time. It was quite an experience- actually pretty damn moving to say different than normal words that have such a meaning in english to me- and have them have the same meaning/feeling in french. Beautiful beautiful mass and experience!

Also, Sunday was the Fete de la Mere (=mother's day in France) and so both of my host-grandmothers came over for lunch, along with my host aunt and uncle (but no Nabil...). Anyway, we all sat around in salon at first and had an "aperitif" (=stuff you drink before you eat= alcohol) and they brought out the Jack Daniels whiskey that I had given them as a "thanks for letting me stay/being my host-parents" gift. Everyone, even the grand-mothers tried some (but some of us with some added Schweeps) and everyone loved it!! Haha... a true Tennessee experience...

Lunch was delicious as usual- and then my host-parent took me to Villefranche for a little walk! They have been so super nice to me lately- taking me places and really showing me where they live and everything about Nice. (And even making speak in French.. but its so good for me!)
Anyway, the walk was beautiful as always and on the way back I commented (in French, bien sur..) on how "I couldn't believe people actually live in places like this" aka "how is this people's actual lives... geez loius!!" But they just laughed at me, because for them they live this everyday and had never thought of it that way.
But wow are those people lucky- the mom of my host-mother lives in that town in a beautiful villa with the most beautiful view I have ever seen! With the prettiest garden...just amazing. (And in that garden there is a small turtle that lives there named Cathy who like to attack anyone's shoes- so funny!)
**Also on a side note we drove by Elton John's Villa in the very same town where he lives/vactions occasionally. Nice.

But now here I am and I have much much much work to do that I haven't done all weekend...aka study for my first test on Tuesday and read 60 more pages of Moliere before Tuesday also.... going to be a good rest of the night and a great Monday! haha....

Beaucoup de choses... sur le 28

Then it was Friday... FINALLY!

Even though it was a little gray and rainy outside we still had a fun fun start to the weekend!

First we went to the hospital- and it was my last day shadowing the nourissons (=infant ward). And it was kind of sad... but I will still be on the same floor next week just with older children, so I can keep an eye on all those precious little sick bebes!!

Then moi, Lorraine, Ashley, Vera, Annalise, and Melissa went back to my host-apt to buy some tickets for future travels!!! Me, Lorraine, Vera, and Annalinse are headed off to Paris next weekend and Melissa and Ashley off to Barcalona!!! Will be sooo much fun :)

Then we hopped on a train to Monaco to see the beautiful city (and all its beautiful people!!!). We just kind of wandered around for a couple of hours and it was sooo beautiful. We walked up this gigantic hill to see the palais, and then walked through these tiny little old streets, and then down by the port, and then around the casino/shops where I could never afford anything, and then back to the train-station to come back to nice. Mmmm it was a nice relaxing afternoon! About half way through we met up with the others.... so that was parfait!!

Then for diner we (about ten of us) went to vieux-nice to eat diner and got some yummy pizza... and the "biggest dessert of all time" (according to the menu "essayez de le finir" =try to finish it!) So me, Mel, Nick and Sarg thought "A CHALLENGE" and so we ordered it to split between the four of us. Well turns out it was just about the size of any American dessert you would get a a restaurant- so well we finished it haha. And it was so delicious... a big bowl full of three different kinds of chocolate mousse... mmmm.

Apres le diner, we went to Alejandro's host-apt and just kinda hung out in the living room for a little while- chatted. listened to music a lil bit, had a biere.
C'était très agréable.

La greve etc

Well once again it is the weekend and I have just stated to write about the week... but its the only days I have time!!!

Alors, (=so...) tuesday and wednesday passed by pretty normally (about as normally as they can here in Nice, haha, hwne one is working in a french hospital, navigating the city, taking multiple classes, and speaking only french whilst doing so...)

But thursday was a different story entirely...
Want to know why??? ... La greve de SCNF/ the strike of all public transportation.

Did you know that here in France one must notify their company/the public if they plan on striking before they can legally go on strike? Interesting, eh? I thought one day everyone just woke up and was like "hmmm I think Ill just make everyone walk today- then they will appreciate me! Hey, Ill call all my bus driver friends and they will too!" Nope not how it happens- which is good for me so I could plan my new mode of transportation for the whole day = my very own two feet!!!

Summary of the day:

7:00 woke up/got ready/ate breakfast
7:45 left my house for the Hospital
8:52 arrived at the hospital (yep over an hour long walk...)
11:30 finished my "stage" and ate lunch with the others
12:15 leave Hospital
13:00 arrive at classroom (yep thats 45 minutes...)
14:00 leave classroom
14:47 arrive at musée Matisse et musée d'archéologie (yep 45 minutes more= all UPHILL)
15:00 commence 2 musée tours
17:30ish finish tours and start the walk back down the hill
18:15 arrive at centre-ville very close to my house and stop for a crepe/oringina with about 5 others... (yep.. another 45 minute walk)
19:00 walk back home
19:15 arrive at home
20:00 diner with host-dad
21:00 skype with mom and george
22:30ish shower/pass out in my bed

total walking time:  60+45+45+45+15 = 210 minutes = 3.5 hours
(note even counting walking around all morning in the hospital and then in the museums- my feet were very very tired that day haha)

Whew- that was even exhausting to write!

Besides the strike though the day was pretty good!! I got to watch a surgery that they streamed live to the auditorium of the hospital of a "femur elongation". It was an orthopedic surgery- and very very violent to watch. Soooo many huge silver instruments and the mallet and the saw... dang.  Bascially the patient had an infection which destroyed some of the bone in his leg and the doctor was placing a 2cm new piece of bone to try to even him out. It took the doctor about 5 tries to get it in the gap he sawed into this young-adult males leg. Shew. Working out /weight lifting is definitely a requirement for becoming an orthopedic surgeon is all I have to say.. haha.

Villa Sophia...

Sooo I just got back from the most beautiful place! My host family has a villa/house (with a little plaque denoting it was called Villa Sophia) in the mountain town of Lenvers (I think that was how it was spelled...) and it was like we went back in time. The grand-mere told me that it has been passed down through the family for seven generations...wow! It was straight out of the movie "Manon" haha.
It was soo nice to just relax (and get some reading done.. but alas I am finished!.. at least for now!)
It was a two story beautiful house with antique everything! Each little room had its own character... but we didn't spend much time inside- seeing as the soleil was perfect today!!
First we ate a delicious lunch, as usual, and then we all took a chair, sat, relaxed, read, and just enjoyed the weather and the nice breeze!
After a little while my host parents took me on a walk around the village and it was so beautiful... kind of a theme in this place, if you were wondering! We even stopped in a little shop/showroom for a scupture-artist who did unique and very pretty local art. After climbing up and up through the winding old-timey rues (=streets), we reached the highest point of the town and the view was breathtaking.. one could see the Alps with their snowy caps, the outline of the sea in tho other direction, and little towns dotted in between...
C'etait parfait :)
After that we walked back and after a couple more hours of relaxation we drove back into town...and now I am here.

And since dinner is almost ready I am going to end this post...but a tout a l'heure! (=later gaters!)

Hospital, Beaches, Day trip to Cannes, etc

Wow. I have failed at upkeep of my blog...je suis tres tres desolee!!!!

Okay here I go...

Wed:
Well I started my shadowing at the hospital and I am in love! Les petites bebes sont tres tres mignonnes! (= the little babies are the cutest ever!) Normally I just follow Sarah, an intern in her second year, around and get to watch her and the Dr do rounds. Its crazy how much responsibility she has for being my age... she is super nice though and if I have questions she tries to help me out...
Mostly I get to watch them examen babies from birth up to two years old and for the most part they are not seriously sick, but because they are so tiny they must be hospitalized for fevers/coughs/infections etc.
The hospital where I get to work is the most beautiful hospital I have ever seen, and the view of the beach from each examination room is breathtaking...

After that we had class and learned about the "Medecines Legistres" who are kind of like our equivalent to Medical Examiner (like from CSI... who does autopsies, but in France they also help with judicial cases to help figure out if fractures were accidental or not and things like that...).
And after that I just wandered around Nice for a while and then some diner with my host family and then some skyping and then bed for a tres tres fatigue Olivia....

Well Thurs:
The hospital went about the same way, except because I lost track of Sarah (haha) I got to spend the day with the "grands enfants" (=children between 2 and 18). So that was also interesting... just a little something different...
And then most of the students who work at Lenval went to the plage (=beach) to eat out packed lunches (which are always a little random and wayyy to much food haha). It was nice to just get to relax and enjoy the sunshine!!
Then on to more classes... nothing too interesting that day, haha.
THEN on to the Musee Chagall (a museum showcasing the art of Chagall), it was interesting... but after a WHOLE day of work the last thing I was in the mood for was more listening and standing- the tour guide pretty much described in detail to us what EVERY color and EVERY symbol meant in almost EVERY painting...  but the paintings were at least interesting to look at. Just not my favorite... but hey to each his own I guess!

Friday:

Only the hospital in the morning!!!! It was soooo amazing to be able to have a free day in the after noon! Almost all of us met on the beach for our dejouner (=Lunch) and it was so fun to get to finally hang out with everyone without being in class/shadowing etc...

But after that I went with Melissa to her house where she is staying and it is in the very very far east Nice.. but there is a beautiful view from her house...And we laid out at the pool at her house ...and saw 13 year old french children have a hissy fight, it was tres amausant!! Bon, alors... apres (=after) we ate at a cute little creperie (=place that makes crepes) and then we went out to a little bar with some others of the group AND these french medical students who we met on Tuesday. Learned lots of things like "carpet" is their equivalent of "extremely drunk". And the meaning of "Giclette" (...trust me: you don't want to know...).Very important things like that. But fun evening overall, and a good way to get to know the group and more about french culture (even if it is not very "proper" french culture... haha...

Sat:
Saturday was probably the most fun and relaxing day yet! 14 of us took a day trip to Cannes to see the film festival (and its vedettes = stars) and to go to the beautiful beaches! After we figured out how to work the train (=complicated), we were on our way to Cannes.  Cannes is a pretty small town and it is possible to walk everywhere... and it is sooo beautiful. We first walked along the outskirts of the festival and saw the red carpet (empty..but still!) and took some pictures around.
Then we saw from afar a cute little village with a church on a hill and decided to explore it! We ended up splitting up into two groups and ten of us walked up the hill to explore... it was so worth it. The view was sooo beautiful and also it was just nice to see all the old buildings with all the character and charm. Then, on the way down from the village we stopped at a cute little cafe to eat lunch. I had a delicious ravioli... yum. Also, because we are American and loud of course we got yelled at by some wiley old Frenchman who "couldn't hear the birds!!" bahaha. Sorry Monsieur.. haha.
Apres: la plage!! (=beach!) It was so beautiful, and with actual sand (because Nice is only rocks!!). We laid around and chatted and some of us even got in the water... but it felt sooo good because the sun was chaud (=hot!). It was nice to just sit around and get to know everyone. And they are all great...and with some good jokes about Tennessee (baha...) and other things/states we were able to become a lot better acquainted :)
Anyway, after the beach, and after stopping at Macdo (=McDonalds) to get Vera her much craved Big Mac, me and Nick found relatively cheap/still good place for diner. And this time the whole group was there!  Also fun...and delicious as always...
Well after that we walked back to the train station (and after a game of "Ninja" while we waited for out train to arrive at the station) and tried to get on the train back to Nice, we got on the wrong one. This train we got on still went to Nice, but it was the TGV (aka it was quicker and more expensive). Well, we realize this too late and the doors have already closed. And get yelled at by the conductor... but after he realized we weren't going anywhere (aka we were stuck on the train..haha) he told us it was not that big of a deal and to just ride this train. Good- since we have no where else to go... so that was kind of an adventure.

And so it was Sunday:
Today I went to mass with my host parents (who sing in the choir... so I sat alone... but it was still nice) and it was interesting to hear all the prayers etc that I know in English said in French. They gave me a book so I could follow along and say the prayers out loud so that made it so much easier... but good experience definitely.
Then we picked up my host dad's mother and drove out to my "host-uncle's" house for lunch etc. My "host-uncle" (brother of my host dad) also hosts a student, Nabil. First of all, we ate the most delicious lunch of all time. Meat, potatoes, salad, bread, and after, fruit, chocolate cake, crepes with assorted fillings...mmm. We chatted about geography of where me and Nabil live and the US etc...and of other random US vs France things. Then we took about a two hour long walk (which was good since I ate my weight in food haha). But because they live way the the East we got to walk along a beach and port called Cagnes Sur Mer and it was also beautiful. I didn't take pictures.... but all the flowers and beaches and little boats and little cafes.
Then we came home at about 7ish...and then a small diner but with big conversation. We talked about the difference in "public health" in France and the US and how in France it is easier to be healthy and there are more incentives/ways to be healthy. More walking, smaller portions, more sport in general done by the public, healthier and fresher/non-chemically foods, etc. And also we chatted about the differences in the "university" system in both countries...especially the med school difference. Because in France there is no "Undergrad", they go straight from lycee (=high school) to their university (but specialized like law school/business/medical...). If you want to know more, just ask me haha, it is way to much to get into here. We also chatted about the differences in the hospitals of the two counties...also complicated topic but interesting definitely!

And now here I am... whew. I need to stay more on top of things, eh?

Well tomorrow, my host family + the dad's mother and I are all going to their "country house" for the majority of the day. I am excited to just chill and read some homework (=Montaigne, not fun...but maybe if I do it in a lounge chair on the terrace??? I hope...). So I am looking forward to that.

But now I need to sleeeeep!
Bonne Nuit "Y'all"

Tuesday, May 18

So much to do, so little time...

Well today began the "stages" (=shadowing) at the Hospital... well it was just an orientation.. but tomorrow we REALLY get to start. I get to work with a pediatrician who specializes in infants...so I get to see some bebes francais!

After that Hannah, Mandy, and I walk along the Rue des Anglais along the beach and it was sooo beultiful. Also, we stopped at a tender little cafe. I got an Orangina and a croissant...delicious!

After that we went to one other the other places where we will have class... and we had a lectur on Leishmaniasis aka a disease that is transmitted by "sand flies" and is prevalent in Mediterranean countries, as well as India and South/Latin America.. interessant, oui?

AFTER THAT, I had another class on "Medicine and Litterature" in which we discussed Margarite de Navarre's "Le Malade". ...Yes I know please be jealous of all the fun I am having.. bahaha....

Anyway, then I ended up going to a cafe/pub with the two Profs and a girl who had just arrived due to the valcano... and that was relaxing to not have class and just get to talk with them... They are very nice!

Wish me luck on my shadowing adventure tomorrow!! And a bientot!

Monday, May 17

Love it here... but could we have less homework pleaseee?

Oh my goodness.. this place is amazing! So beautiful! BUT.. there is soo much to do.. it is a little overwhelming.  Yesterday, after a transatlantic flight on which I did not sleep thanks to someone who didn't atop me from chatting the whole time and a glass of red wine, I had a full day of eating and walking around Nice.. I was very very tired.

My host family is soo nice and they basically tell me de faire quoi je veux (do what I want..). So I have a lot of freedom ...and a nice big bedroom with my own bathroom..and wifi! So I am soo happy with that!
Also they talk to me non-stop, and only in French, which is good. English is also forbidden in all of my classes here and also in any kind of conversation had around either of the professors- if they hear you they will comment haha.

Also different here is how they eat- very small dishes and lots of them, one at a time. We have maybe 5 courses for each meal but each is small- but still delicious!

So we had orientation today, and that is mostly why I feel overwhelmed.. becauseI already have soo much homework!! (mostly lots and lots of reading!) And tomorrow we have an orientation at the hospital- I work at Lenval, the children's hospital, so I am very excited for that. I start out with infants, then gen peids, then neonatal, then hematology at a different hospital, Archet. Slightly intimidating but I guess I will see tomorrow how it goes.  Right after that we have our first classes and a conference with a doctor. Very VERY busy day tomorrow.

Also, I met most of the class today and they were all nice- some of us even stopped at a cafe and chatted for a bit- I admit some conversations were in English- but it was fun and I am looking forward to the upcoming weeks :)

I am still a little tired from the jetlag but hopefully by tomorrow it will be better... now I must read some Margarite de Navarre ... mmmrrrrr...

A beintot!

PS Too busy to take/upload pictures yet but they will come sooooon!
